BEING A HEALTH OCCUPATIONS EDUCATOR
Teaching
is a gift in itself. It has given me the privilege to
guide students and teach them about Health Occupations.
Health Career Certification is the name of my program.
After completing the first year of basics
in Anatomy & Physiology, Basic Medical Terminology,
and Nursing Assistant skills, students enroll in Health
Career Certification. Each student is an individual.
Every semester is a new class with bright and enthusiastic
students ready to be employed in the health career industry.
Many choose different career paths. It is my job to
see that each student succeeds and meet their chosen
objectives.
No matter what career a student choose,
they all will complete the following competencies, Medical
Law and Legal Ethics, Safety and Infection Control,
Basic Computers and Internet Research, Nutrition and
Healthy Living, 1st Aid and CPR, and Personal and Professional
Development through HOSA. After being instructed on
the basics, they can choose from one or more of the
following career paths ; Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy,
EKG, Certified Therapeutic Massage and Reflexology,
Pharmacy Technician, Veterinarian Technician, Administrative
Medical Assisting, Billing and Coding, Insurance filing,
Medical Transcription, Certified Medication Aide, and
Dental Assisting.
If it sounds impossible, well it would
be without the community and mentor support. Southeastern
Oklahoma has very special medical personnel who want
to see our community prosper. Therefore, they have joined
with my program to help each student reach their full
potential.
Every one of my fulltime students completes
the National Recognition Program and participates at
the regional and state HOSA leadership levels. My program
has taken 1st place students to nationals every year!
HOSA is our student organization. We are partners in
HOSA. The more involved they are the more they will
succeed at their career. It gives them confidence and
skills they need to be their very best. I am so thankful
that I have been given this opportunity to see my students,
learn, grow, and become. Every day is a new challenge,
however with HOSA as a partner it makes my career a
little easier.
Marilyn Turvey had aspirations of being
a nurse since she was 13 years old. After receiving
her associate’s degree in Science, she planned
on continuing in RN school. Plans changed when she fell
in love, married, and move to Pawhuska, Oklahoma. In
1978 there were no colleges that she could afford to
attend that were close by so she decided to become an
LPN at Tri-County Technology Center (formally Tri-County
Vo-Tech) in Bartlesville. She became a member of HOSA (HOSA). She was elected
President of her local chapter. Little did she realize
that she would touch a lot of lives through teaching
Health Career Certification. This is her 10th year at
Kiamichi, McAlester. She has been an active member/advisor
of HOSA for 11 years. In her 2nd year of teaching, Marilyn
was nominated by her students and peers to receive the
state and national award for outstanding advisor of
the year.
