Career Health Display Becomes a Regular Event
The HOSA Competitive Events Program has a goal of
continuous improvement. HOSA is always open to considering new
events that will serve HOSA members and support Health Occupations
Education. One of the newest and most promising HOSA Competitive
Event is the Career Health Display.
In 1996, Michigan HOSA presented their idea for "Career Health
Display" to National HOSA. That June, Michigan HOSA demonstrated
the event at the National Leadership Conference in Chicago. The
event earned praise from those who evaluated it, and was promoted
to a pilot event in the national program.
As a pilot event, some changes were made to Career Health
Display, including a requirement that two HOSA members create
and present the display, and making it a team event. The event ran
as a pilot at the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, with
great participation and positive reviews from competitors, judges,
and event personnel. Following the NLC, the HOSA Competitive
Events Program promoted Career Health Display to a regular
competitive event.
What makes Career Health Display special?
Teamwork!
Over the years, HOSA members have shown that they love team
events. There is something special about working with friends
toward achieving a common goal, and Career Health Display provides
that opportunity.
Creativity!
Career Health Display offers HOSA members an opportunity to
be creative and put a little of their own personality into their
display. Event judges at the National Conference were impressed
with the quality of work demonstrated in the displays.
It Lasts!
The display is tangible. HOSA members have something to "show
off" for their hard work and value-added learning. The displays
and their creators can travel to other classrooms, student
centers, other schools, state conferences, malls, civic
organizations, and even state educational agencies. What a
great way to market a career and HOSA!
It's Curricular!
The Career Health Display event makes learning about
a health career fun and informative. One member who helped
create a display on Veterinary Medicine said, "I'm pretty sure
that now I know more about being a Veterinarian than my Health
Occupations teacher. It's been great!"
The Career Health Display is proving to be a popular new
addition to the HOSA Competitive Events Program. Thanks to
Michigan HOSA for providing the idea, and to those HOSA
members who participated in the event in Chicago and Anaheim.
It looks like Career Health Display is here to stay!
