**** FOR ALL CATEGORIES - All 50-question written tests will have a one hour time limit,
except Medical Math; all 100-question written tests will have a one and one-half hour time limit.
CATEGORY I - watch for reference revisions/changes, updated
test plans for several events and a revised conversion chart
for Medical Math.
CATEGORY II
- For all events in Category II, based on the recommendation
from AHA, digital thermometers will be utilized rather than
glass thermometers.
- Administrative Medical Assisting - a Coding procedure will
be added this year.
- CPR/First Aid - procedure steps will be re-evaluated and
aligned with the reference, if necessary.
- Dental Assisting - reference change: The Dental Assistant
published by Delmar was deleted and Essentials of Dental
Assisting published by Saunders was added. There were
several procedural step changes made based on letters
received.
- Nursing Assisting - reference change; drop the medical
assisting reference and add Fundamentals of Nursing Assisting
published by Glencoe.
- Physical Therapy Aide - For the Range of Motion procedure,
steps related to neck ROM were deleted.
- Practical Nursing - reference added - Fundamental Skills
and Concepts published by Lippincott.
- Respiratory Care will no longer be offered as a competitive
event.
- Sports Medicine - students will be allowed to wear shorts
and polo type shirts for competition, IF this is their professional
uniform.
CATEGORY III
- Extemporaneous Writing - One hour will be allowed for
writing, and the number of words will not be counted.
- Speaking events - speeches shall be no more than the
allowed minutes; competitors will be stopped at the maximum
time limit, except Speaking Skills.
- Researched Persuasive Speaking - word count changes with
a maximum of 500 words considered, excluding the words a,
an, the.

- Community Awareness - change in rating sheet to add more
points for the Presentation; Title Page and Table of Contents
are excluded in the count of 20 pages. Electronic and Non-electronic
options will be continued.
- Career Health Display - competitors may have note cards
during the oral presentations; electronic and non-electronic
options will be continued.
- HOSA Bowl - tape recorders will not be used during the
rounds.
- Medical Reading - moved to a regular event for 1999-
2000 with some guideline revisions.
