2011-2012 Executive Council

Sean Sheffer
National President
shefferhosa@gmail.com

Perception becoming reality is only an imagination away, and Sean has immersed himself in the passionate reality that is HOSA.  Sean Sheffer has been a part of HOSA for five years, since the inception of Nevada HOSA in 2006. Since then, he has served in various positions at the local, state and national levels.

As a former HOSA Bowl fast-paced knowledge competitor, his team placed second at nationals;   he also competed in Extemporaneous Speaking and Health Education at the national level. Sean has attended various conferences across the nation promoting HOSA to public officials and educators.

Sean attends school at the University Of Pennsylvania where he is pursuing a dual degree in the School of Nursing and Wharton School of Business.  He is a recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholarship and a Questbridge Scholar.  He wishes to become a Business CEO in Health Care Management and also takes an interest in Marketing and Management.

Sean has two simple challenges for everyone he meets:  (1) think differently, always and (2) believe.

If there are two sides to every story, take the third side because thinking differently, in ways that are not so obvious, can be the key to solving the challenges society has today.  By taking a different perspective and believing it can be done, HOSA becomes much more than a student-led organization, it becomes the key to unleashing limitless potential.  Sean believes in always thinking differently and shares a quote by Thomas Edison:  "When you exhaust all possibilities, remember this: you haven't".

David Kelly
National President-Elect
dkellyhosa@gmail.com

How does a team of eight serve the needs of over 130,000 members? As a member of the HOSA National Executive Council, David Kelly believes that all teams function the same way – whether they serve one individual or millions – it is in service to each, one at a time.

An Oklahoma native, David is a senior at Edmond Memorial High School and starting his third year at the Biosciences and Medicine Academy at Francis Tuttle Technology Center.  Before moving to Edmond, his educational experience included attending the American School of The Hague in The Netherlands.

David served HOSA as State President of Oklahoma, and he competed in both HOSA Bowl and the Kaiser Permanente Healthcare Issues Exam.

David’s involvement in HOSA is driven by his desire to become a trauma surgeon in a metropolitan hospital.   He credits HOSA with the development of many of his leadership and professional skills.  David believes that HOSA inspires members to give back to their community in the most valuable way – with their time. He knows that his membership in HOSA will continue to help him accomplish his goals.

David draws his inspiration in life from an ironic truth: "Medicine – the only profession that seeks to destroy the reason for its existence."

Sara Sapp
Postsecondary/Collegiate Vice President
sapphosa@gmail.com

A native of the Sunshine State of Florida, Sara Sapp attends the University of Florida as a junior pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Health Education and Behavior on a Pre-Medical track. She competed in Physical Therapy Assisting, Kaiser Permanente Healthcare Issues Exam, and Chapter Newsletter placing on the national level.

Sara is grateful to HOSA for nurturing her into the leader she is today, which has given her the opportunity to "pay it forward". She is the Captain of the Streetlight Cystic Fibrosis Team, which delivers palliative care to patients dealing with end of life situations. She also serves as a volunteer Senior Research Assistant for a study on the psychosocial needs of adolescents with cystic fibrosis at the Pediatric Pulmonary Division of Shands at UF Hospital.

She leads by the quote, "Positivity is seeing the invisible, feeling the intangible, and achieving the impossible."

As a freshman at Arizona State University majoring in Pre Med/Biological Sciences, she knows that a new chapter in her life has just begun.

Tayla’s goal as a national officer is to ensure that all members have the ultimate HOSA Experience!

Tayla’s motto is:"Do things for passion, NOT position."  With the help of HOSA, Tayla has always been able to attain this goal.

Nathalie Figueroa
Region II Vice President
figueroahosa@gmail.com

On life’s journey, brains, heart, and courage come in handy and Nathalie has not seized to overlook these lessons as she embarks on a new chapter of her life. From her early days in HOSA four years ago in the Leisure Medicine and Health Sciences Academy at Coral Reef Senior High School, Nathalie has always found excitement in servitude and leadership. Competing in Creative Problem Solving, CERT, and Public Health Emergency Preparedness, as well as serving Florida HOSA as State President-Elect and State President have taught her valuable lessons in teamwork; skills which she continues to strive to develop.

As a freshman and Posse Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Society, Nathalie hopes to continue a track in which she can merge her passion for global affairs and medicine.  HOSA has truly led to some of her most notable successes including titles such as Silver Knight Recipient in the Vocational and Technical field, President’s Volunteer Service Award Recipient for 4,500 hours of community service, and Congressional Award Recipient. It truly fulfills her focus to have silent thoughts resonate into loud actions.

Nathalie feels honored to be part of a nationwide community that embraces different cultures, skills, and ambitions and propels the multiple facets of healthcare to members and nonmembers.

Her social and curious personality continue to fuel her excitement to meet members, advisors, and professionals nationwide and become emerged in the diverse environments in which HOSA continues to thrive.  It is truly a privilege for her to be representing HOSA as it fulfills its ever-growing, ever-expanding, and everlasting list of purposes.

Nabil Islam
Region III Vice President
islamhosa@gmail.com

Being his fourth year as a HOSA member, Nabil Islam has truly embarked the HOSA experience as he faced numerous challenges that helped him get to the top as Region III Vice President. As each day passes, his HOSA experience grows, thus, his passion towards the health care field increases immensely. A rising senior at Passaic County Technical Institute in New Jersey, Nabil challenges himself towards numerous opportunities in order to become an outstanding leader and tackle any obstacles that stand before him.

Nabil’s driving force towards health care comes from his inspiration of some day becoming a Biomedical Engineer and reaching a position in the Senate.  Nabil, one day, hopes to attend the University of Pennyslvania where he wants to obtain a degree in biomedical engineering and political science.  The reason Nabil’s passion for HOSA is powerful is because he views HOSA as an organization made up of students from all across the nation but when they come together at the National Leadership Conference, they are all one and equal.

Nabil is excited to serve as a national officer and to serve as the voice for the members in Region III. Aiming for success and striving to the top, Nabil truly lives by Mahatma Gandhi's words:  "Be the change you want to see in the world."
